On Saturday, February 15, 2025, McDowell County faced unprecedented flooding, causing devastation that has profoundly impacted the community. The extent of the damage is overwhelming, leaving many without their homes and altering lives permanently. The images depicting the aftermath are truly heartbreaking.

This is not the vision I wish to have of Welch and McDowell County, a place steeped in history and home to great, hard-working people. I recall a moment on February 7, 2021, while traveling along US 52; I glanced at the downtown area and was struck by the breathtaking sight of a pristine snowfall blanketing the city. I felt compelled to stop and capture this moment, resulting in a photograph that beautifully portrays the untouched landscape. The photo has received no edits/retouching.
